Watchmen & Insecure Pace the Black Reel Awards for TV Nominations

Black*ish & This Is Us each receive six noms

Two HBO series, Watchmen and Insecure, were the crown jewels of the 4th Annual Black Reel Awards for Television as the nominations were unveiled today. Both series received ten nominations and making them the favorites in their respective categories for this year’s awards.

The sequel to the critically-acclaimed film of the same name, the series continues several decades into the future as the show follows the origin of the original Minutemen, precursors to the Watchmen. Created by Damon Lindelof, the series was nominated for Outstanding TV Movie/Limited Series and also received nominations for Outstanding Actress (Regina King), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Yahya Abdul-Manteen II, Jovan Adepo, and Louis Gossett, Jr.), and Outstanding Directing (Stephen Williams for both “She Was Killed by Space Junk” and “This Extraordinary Being”). In addition, Watchmen also picked up two additional Outstanding Writing nominations for Damon Lindelof & Christal Henry (“If You Don’t Like My Story, Write Your Own”) and Lindelof & Cord Jefferson (“This Extraordinary Being”), as well asl a final nod for Outstanding Music (Comedy, Drama, TV Movie or Limited Series) for Liza Richardson.

The deterioration of the friendship between Issa and Molly served as the focus for the Insecure, garnering an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, as well as Outstanding Actress (Issa Rae), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Jay Ellis) and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Yvonne Orji and
Natasha Rothwell). Stella Meghie also received an Outstanding Directing nod for “Lowkey Movin’ On” and two nods for Outstanding Writing, Comedy Series (“Lowkey Happy” written by Natasha Rothwell, and “Lowkey Movin’ On” written by Syreeta Singleton).

Also returning to the Outstanding Comedy race is Black*ish, which received seven nods including the aforementioned Outstanding Comedy as well asl nominations for Outstanding Actor and Actress for Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, Outstanding Supporting Actress nods for Jenifer Lewis and Marsai Martin. Creator Kenya Barris’ other comedy series, #BlackAF secured him four additional nominations, including two for Rashida Jones (Outstanding Actress and Outstanding Directing (“Still….because of slavery”). Barris also received a nomination for Outstanding Directing for “Yo, between you and me….this is because of slavery”

For the first time in the history of the awards, perennial favorite, This Is Us did not receive an Outstanding Drama nomination. Due to the proliferation of so many freshman favorites (All Rise, For Life, Godfather of Harlem, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, and others), many veteran shows found themselves on the outside looking. The two-time Outstanding Drama winner will be represented this year by Sterling K. Brown (Outstanding Actor), Susan Kelechi Watson (Outstanding Supporting Actress), Kevin Hooks (Outstanding Directing for “A Hell of a Week: Part One” as well as Outstanding Writing, Drama Series for Jon Dorsey.

On the strength of eight programs, HBO secured 30 nominations this year with Netflix coming in a close second with 24 nominations spread out over ten programs.

The 4th Annual Black Reel Awards for Television will air on Thursday, August 6, 2020.
