Foundation membership is limited to professionals working in film, television and the music. The Foundation has 4 branches, for the crafts ranging from film, television, independent and music categories,

The Foundation’s membership process is by sponsorship, not application. Candidates must either be sponsored by two Academy members from the branch to which the candidate seeks admission or selected at-large by the Executive Director of the Black Reel Awards.
Additionally, Black Reel Award nominees are automatically considered for membership and do not require sponsors.
Nominees and sponsored candidates are reviewed by branch committees and recommendations for membership are considered by the Foundation’s Board of Governors. The Board decides which individuals will receive invitations.
Membership review takes place once a year, in the spring. The current cycle deadline for candidates is Friday, April 29, 2016.
The Black Reel Awards, based in the Nation’s Capital, is a international organization, spolighting the best films from around the world.
Sponsoring a candidate for membership in the Foundation is a serious commitment. Please make sure you are confident the candidate has truly “demonstrated exceptional achievement in one of the applicable areas” before you agree to sponsor an individual.

- A member may sponsor only one candidate per membership cycle
- Candidates for branch membership must be sponsored by members of the branch in question.
NEW MEMBERS PROPOSAL PROCESS
A candidate for membership must be sponsored by two members of the branch for which the individual qualifies or be selected at-large by the Executive Director.
After you have filled out the proposal card with the two sponsor signatures and contact information for the candidate, send the completed card, including sponsor recommendation letters (if required by the branch) back to the Membership Department. After all information has been received and verified, an email will be sent to the candidate requesting additional information on work experience.

Each candidate who receives a favorable endorsement from the appropriate Executive Committee will be submitted to the Board of Governors for final approval and invitation to membership.
