For the past 17 years, The Black Reel Awards have honored films and performances in theatrical, television, world cinema, and independent cinema. With the announcement of the inaugural “BRATs,” those categories, which previously were a part of the Black Reel Awards will now solely exist as their own standalone entity.

“We are excited for the opportunity to expand our brand as we spotlight so many incredible shows and performances on both network and cable television,” said Black Reel Award Founder and Executive Director Tim Gordon. “We are living a modern “Golden Age of Television,” featuring so much amazing programming. We’re anxious to shine a light on the brilliant work of many extraordinary individuals who routinely toil in anonymity.”

The inaugural “BRATs” will consist of 25 categories focusing primarily on dramas, comedies, as well as movies/limited series. The award will honor African-Americans and those of African descent performers as well as those working in various aspects of network and cable television production.

The television categories that were formerly part of the Black Reel Awards will now transfer to the “BRATs” and will be awarded as a part of that show. The eligibility period for submission for the “BRATs” will take place annually from June 1 to May 31.
