2014 has proven to be “The Year of Saldana” as the talented actress/producer became the woman to earn FOUR nominations in a single year!!!
Coming into the year with three prior nominations, Saldana doubled her output with a HUGE year garnering nominations for Guardians of the Galaxy (Outstanding Supporting Actress, Motion Picture), Voice Performance (The Book of Life), Outstanding Actress, TV and as a producer for Outstanding TV Movie (Rosemary’s Baby).
The Dominican beauty, who first received Black Reel Awards recognition for her performance in Guess Who has evolved into an multi-talented actress/producer who is comfortable in both smaller films as she is in studio blockbusters.
Her star power will be severely tested for her upcoming film, Nina. The film, which generated sizable controversy for casting Saldana in the lead, is biopic of the enigmatic singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist widely associated with jazz music. Simone worked in a broad range of styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop.
Much of the controversy centered around the fact that Saldana’s skin was darkened for the role. Will she be able to channel Simone’s essence and win over her detractors with a winning performance?
