Displaying “RAW” Talent, Gugu Mbatha-Raw becames the first woman to receive multiple nominations in the same category (Outstanding Actress, Motion Picture) joining Denzel Washington as the only actor to accomplish this feat!!!
After years of not finding her niche in a litany of roles beneath her talent, the British beauty broke through in a MAJOR way with two extraordinary performances this year. Based on the true story of 1779 painting of Dido Elizabeth Belle beside her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray, at Kenwood House, Raw was fantastic under the direction of fellow Brit, Amma Asante.
She followed up her impressive performance in the period drama with a contemporary turn as a singer trapped as a video vixen in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s musical drama, Beyond the Lights. As songbird Noni, Raw unleashed her considerable vocal talents to portray a tortured singer who chafes under the intense shadow of her “momanger” played by Minnie Driver.
Raw’s performances earned her both nominations from the British Independent Film Awards for Belle and also recognition from the Gotham Independent Spirit Awards for Beyond the Lights. The 31-year old beauty is also competing against herself for Black Reel Awards Outstanding Actress for her equally-solid dual performances.
Up next for Raw is the biopic Concussion, starring Will Smith, the story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who first discovered extensive brain damage in NFL players and tried to put a stop to it. Raw’s confidence should be sky-high and we look forward to what the future holds for the multi-talented actress.
